From humble Beginnings to the World’s Leading Audi & VW Tuner


Regardless of which product category - engine technology, aerodynamics, sports wheels, exhaust systems, suspension or brakes, ABT Sportsline strives to constantly improve, set and achieve new goals, and win. This is our motivation on the racetrack and in the development of intelligent enhancement components for street use. Our company philosophy, not just an empty theory, but the result of decades of commitment made to the demanding and competitive industry of international Motorsport. This unique capability and wealth of experience, combined with our existing close partnership with the technological leaders, Audi and VW, will keep us moving well into the future.

ABT 1896   ABT 1950
Johann Abt founds a blacksmith’s shop in Kempten, Germany.  

His grandson completes his first race on the Kempten grass track, followed by more than 300 Motorsport victories.

ABT 1967   ABT 1978

ABT Tuning is founded. Johann Abt proves successful in numerous hill climbs with the Fiat Abarth.

 

VW releases the Golf. ABT becomes one of the leading companies in vehicle enhancement. The ABT racing team celebrates a double triumph at the ‘Trophée l’Avenir’ touring car series.

ABT 1980   ABT 1991/1992

Chip tuning sees the light of day and is perfected by ABT specialists. Initial success at the Formula racing series.

 

Christian and Hans-Jürgen Abt take control of the company and establish ABT Sportsline GmbH in 1991. Christian evolves into a victorious racing driver, winning the Formula Junior title in 1991, and becoming the Formula 3(B) champion in 1992, and STW (Super Touring Car) champion in 1999.

Following Audi’s withdrawal from the STW, ABT Sportsline assumes control of the program alone, and with great success. At nine of the ten races Christian Abt or his team mate Kris Nissen stand on the podium, and often together. The season is dominated by the fierce battle between Christian Abt and Opel driver Uwe Alzen. Christian Abt comes out on top, the sensational champion recording the greatest ever, sporting victory in the company’s history.

 

As the STW era concludes, the greatest motorsport adventure begins for ABT Sportsline. The race team joins the DTM (German Touring Car Championship) as a private team, and brings four in-house designed and built ABT Audi TT R cars to the grid. The tuning business grows consistently each year. ABT Sportsline GmbH employs almost two hundred people, is represented in almost 70 countries across all five continents, and to this day is the world’s largest tuner of vehicles for the Audi, VW and Škoda brands.

ABT 2002   ABT 2004

In addition to Christian Abt, Laurent Aiello, Mattias Ekström, Martin Tomczyk and the former Formula 1 driver, Karl Wendlinger from Austria, complete the team. The season begins with a ‘one-two’ at Hockenheim. ABT Sportsline heads the DTM standings for the first time. At nine of the ten races at least one ABT driver celebrates on the podium. In the end, Laurent Aiello is champion, the man with the most victories, most qualification race wins, most pole positions and highest number of fastest race laps. A dream is fulfilled for the ABT Sportsline team, beating both Mercedes-Benz and Opel, to win the DTM championship.

 

Adria, Lausitzring, Zandvoort, Brünn. Mattias Ekström wins four races and takes the DTM championship title for Team ABT Sportsline, finishing seventeen points ahead. At only three race meets did the Swedish driver not finish with a podium place, consistently scoring points at every race.

ABT 2007   ABT 2008

The season’s duel is set. Bruno Spengler vs. Mattias Ekström. After the final race, ‘Eki’ takes the DTM title for ABT, only three points ahead of the Canadian, and this despite both of them only winning one race each. Mattias Ekström won the first race at Hockenheim, but remained at the top throughout the season. His team, Audi Sport Team ABT Sportsline, also wins the team championship.

 

ABT Sportsline defends their DTM title. This time the champion is Timo Scheider, winning at Oschersleben, Brands Hatch and the Hockenheim finale. With nerves of steel, the German driver keeps his archrival, Paul DiResta, at bay.

ABT 2009   ABT 2009

A DTM title hat trick for ABT Sportsline, Timo Scheider repeats the previous year’s triumph, becoming champion again. For ABT, the third DTM title in a row forms part of a particularly successful year.

 

Another title! The ADAC GT Masters proving the ideal setting for Christian Abt. The former DTM pro takes his Audi R8 to the finale, winning the season by twelve points, an extraordinary performance by the 42 year old.

ABT 2009   ABT 2010

The third triumph! Christian Abt completes his active career, making way for Daniel Abt, son of ABT Sportsline’s Managing Director, Hans-Jürgen Abt. Daniel wins the ADAC Formel Masters even before his seventeenth birthday, rounding off a perfect year in motorsport for ABT.

 

Daniel Abt is promoted to the German Formula 3 Cup, again proving what he is capable of. He finishes second overall.

ABT 2010   ABT 2011

There is only one Team ABT Sportsline. While they miss out on an overall victory, the ABT drivers give an excellent performance at the ADAC GT Masters. The team wins the team championship and celebrates with the entire crew.

 

The DTM championship has proved a battle between Audi and Mercedes-Benz since 2006. ABT Sportsline concludes this era with yet another title. Mattias Ekström and Mike Rockenfeller bring home the DTM team championship. In 2012 the cards will be reshuffled. BMW enters the DTM, each manufacturer will build new cars. Leading the pack are Mattias Ekström and Timo Scheider from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline in the new Audi A5 DTM.

ABT 2012    ABT 2013

After completing an exceptional GP3 race season as runner up, Daniel Abt, now twenty years old, signs a contract with Team Lotus GP to start in the renown GP2 series the following year. GP2 is regarded as the top-level junior category below Formula 1. Drivers race in Dallara GP2 cars, powered by a 612 hp V8 engine.

 

 From the Race track to the Street: Cars like the impressive RS5-R are proving ABT’s Know-how and are celebrated by both media and customers. Among other things the extreme athlete, about 100 kilograms lighter than the serial car, was awarded “Best Coupe Tuning” at the “Sportscars of the Year”-election of the renowned magazine Auto Bild.
